The Australian Pelican is huge majestic bird found in coastal areas all over Australia but particularly river mouths around the Mid-West. With a super scooper sized bill, the Pelican uses it like a net to scoop up a fishy lunch before draining its bill and swallowing them whole. It also uses its bill as a water catchment tool! Weighing up to 10kg, the Pelican is still able to be a master flyer using thermal currents to rise up to thousands of metres to catch his preferred highway in the sky...
This Pelican was spotted near the South Gates sand dunes in Geraldton but he could very well have flown from the Greenough River on his way north for a feed of fish from the locals in Kalbarri..
